The Wengenroths were one of two main families who received aid from the Ormans. Karl and Irmgard Wengenroth had two girls: Barbelle, who was around 4 years old when the correspondence began, and Karen, who was about 5 months old. Karl was an American POW who was able to return to his family. Their town, Gemuenden, was severely damaged by bombing during the war. With no way to earn income and limited ability to get supplies into the town, the Wengenroth family was reliant on the Ormans’ aid through the church.
Through sickness, hunger, and desperation, Mr. and Mrs. Wengenroth attended church and had faith that the Lord would redeem their situation. They joyfully celebrated holidays like Christmas and Easter with their church, and they found joy in singing in the choir or enjoying the new organ.
